Moreton Bay Swim 2026: Community, Courage and Calm Waters

This article first appeared in the March 2026 edition of the SSG Multisports newsletter.

What began in 2020 with just nine SSG swimmers has grown into Brisbane’s only dedicated open water swim. The 2026 Moreton Bay Swim welcomed around 300 participants across the 1 km, 2 km and 4 km distances at Suttons Beach on a perfect February morning.

President Jodie Brighton captured the magic of the day. “There were a few emotional moments, but standing on the beach that morning and seeing the calm, beautiful conditions, and then watching swimmers head out with smiles and nerves, that really got me. It was one of those moments where everything just came together.”

The overwhelmingly positive participant survey confirmed what many felt on the day, with 98 percent satisfaction and 93 percent rating the SSG community vibe as very or extremely friendly. Jodie believes this welcoming atmosphere is at the core of who we are. “SSG is built on support, inclusiveness and encouragement. From our volunteers to our swimmers, everyone plays a role in creating that vibe. People feel welcome the moment they arrive, and that’s something we’re really proud of.”

One of the greatest joys for Jodie was watching so many first time ocean swimmers step up and cross the finish line with big smiles. “Watching people step outside their comfort zone and achieve something they didn’t think they could do, that’s what it’s all about.”

Strong local support helped make the event possible. Major sponsor QScan Redcliffe, together with generous raffle prizes and medals from other businesses, added to the special atmosphere. “Events like this simply don’t happen without the support of local businesses and organisations,” said Jodie. “We’re incredibly grateful.

The survey and volunteer debrief provided clear, manageable feedback for next year, including improvements around shade, buoy visibility and drink station placement. Jodie is already looking forward to implementing these changes.

Looking ahead, the club is seeking someone interested in taking on the role of Moreton Bay Swim Director or Organiser to share the responsibilities. Jodie has offered full support and guidance to anyone who steps up.

Jodie’s closing message is an open invitation to the community. “If you’ve ever thought about doing an ocean swim, this is your sign. The Moreton Bay Swim is for everyone, whether it’s your first time or your tenth. Come down, be part of the community, and experience something really special.”

A heartfelt thank you goes to the Redcliffe Surf Life Saving Club for their outstanding safety support, all our dedicated volunteers, and every swimmer who made the day so memorable.

We look forward to welcoming even more Ninjas back to Suttons Beach in 2027.
